Georgetown Lake Colorado Winter Elopement
This winter wonderland elopement was one to remember… but not for reasons you may imagine. Of course, there were beautiful frozen winter landscapes, dream-like snowy conditions, and an incredible couple and family with an amazing attitude.
As we all know, Colorado is unpredictable in the winter time. We got a first hand experience of how unpredictable it is. As we headed into the mountains to go to their ceremony location, it was white-out conditions with 50+ mph winds. We went down the mountain to head towards our plan B ceremony location. As we pulled up to the famously fickle Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnel, the tunnel closed down due to inclement conditions (and later, we discovered, an accident). We sat on the on-ramp for 30 minutes without moving an inch. I decided it would be best to turn around and head back east where it wasn’t as snowy. As we turned around, one of their vehicles went straight into the ditch.
Talk about the worst timing! We were able to get them out of the ditch with the help of shovels and traction boards. As we pulled over to regroup after the incident, we looked to our right and realized how gorgeous the side of the road was. Within a perfect little clearing, we had their first look with the snow-drench trees as their backdrop (did I mention all of this happened and the couple had not yet seen each other yet?!). It ended up being the perfect spot.
We finally made it to our plan C ceremony location, which ended up being the best location we could have imagined. We were surrounded by gorgeous fluttering snow, winter wonderland mountain views, and a frozen lake to walk on. After their ceremony, the snow really started coming down, which meant it was time for a snowball fight! Everyone in their party donned their winter gear, and the biggest, best snowball fight I’ve ever been a part of commenced.
This is why I always have more than one plan going into elopement days. It’s important to hire an elopement photographer who is extremely familiar with the area and can come up with multiple back-up plans in case of emergency. If it weren’t for my extensive knowledge of the area, this day would not have turned out like it did.
This day will forever be my call-to-action on why it’s important to have multiple back-up plans going into elopement days. This day ended up being SO fun, and I am so thankful these guys trusted me with switching up the plans!
Here’s what they had to say about their experience with me:
“Emily was by far THE BEST elopement photographer EVER! She made everything such a fun experience for my husband and I. Her vibes are UNMATCHED!!!! It was like we had known her our whole lives when we met. If it had more than 5 stars, she’s def get a million! And let’s not forget, she captured some REALLY NICE photos. So great personality, great photographer, FUN, I say 1000000000/10 HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Thanks a TON Emily!
